Yitzchak Meir Kluska wrote this diary during the years 1943 and 1944 whilst hiding from the Nazis in the foundation of a chimney hearth of a Polish neighbour.
The tiny bunker was 2 metres wide, 1.8 metres long and 3 metres high.
He shared the crowded space with his brother Chaskel and five other Jews from Jedrzejow for 694 days before finally being liberated by the Russian army in January 1945.
This extraordinary publication contains two books within one case: the handwritten Yiddish diary on the right and the edited translation on the left. The English version features a moving prologue written by daughter Genia Janover and an epilogue that reveals what happened to Yitzchak Meir and the other survivors once they emerged from hiding.
The original diary has been donated to the Jewish Holocaust Museum and Research Centre in Melbourne.
This book was shortlisted for the Australian Book Design Association (ABDA) 'Best Designed Non-Fiction Book of the Year 2019’
